A Day In The Bay

Horsehoe Bay, the bay between the island of Rinca and Nusa Kode, is quite a mystical place. Most of the time, there is no other boats around which turn this bay into such a treat from the sometimes so busy rest of the Komodo National Park. Waking up in the morning to the birds singing, dolphins passing through the channel and Komodo dragons walking along the beach, gives it the atmosphere of complete peace and tranquility.

Not only black sand suitable for some world class muck diving can be found in the proximity of the bay where we anchor (with different kinds of Frogfish, Flamboyant Cuttlefish and Wonderpus being the special finds of this trip) but also walls and sea mounts covered in all types of colourful soft corals. It’s quite common to see Mobula Rays hunting up in the shallows, Hawksbill Turtles feeding on the reef and for the extremely lucky divers, there might be a few dolphins passing by and saying hello.

Surface intervals are ideally spend taking the dinghies over to the beach and watching the
dinosaur-like Komodo dragons catching some sun, strolling along the beach or even going for a swim. The peaceful atmosphere is only interrupted by some irregular splashes caused by an enormous white Oceanic Manta Ray barrel rolling and feeding on the surface!
